Amplifying Youth Voices: Bolton Youth Council and the Power of Article 12
The Bolton Youth Council is a group of young people working to make a real difference in their community. It’s a place where ideas are heard, and decisions are shaped by young people themselves. This work is closely linked to Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which gives children and young people the right to share their views and ensures those views are taken seriously.
Article 12 is an important part of children’s rights. It gives young people the chance to share their opinions on decisions that affect them and ensures that those opinions are taken seriously. It’s about making sure young people have a say in schools, communities, and beyond, showing that their voices are just as important as everyone else’s.
I think Article 12 empowers young people to have their voices heard in a society where children’s opinions are not taken seriously, as adults assume they lack maturity.”
- Jasmine, Co-chair of Bolton Youth Council
Article 12 connects closely to Bolton Youth Council. It gives young people the right to share their views, and the council puts this into action by giving them a space to speak up and influence decisions. The Youth Council makes sure young voices are heard and that young people can help shape the future of their community.
The Bolton Youth Council focuses on important issues like mental health, education, and safety. They meet with local leaders, start campaigns, and work to ensure that young people’s ideas and concerns are part of the decisions being made.
Youth councils like ours make Article 12 more than words on paper, It’s a space where we can influence real change and show that our opinions matter just as much as anyone else’s.
- Prusha, Member of Bolton Youth Council
