Isn’t it frustrating when people leave their litter on the streets, not thinking about how they are making their local area look unpleasant?

Locals in Farnworth and Kearsley share the same frustration and are committed to making their community litter-free.

People within the local community often take part in litter picking in their spare time, clearing areas that are consumed by litter.

Despite the feeling of frustration seeing litter around the local area, locals who take part in litter picking describe the process as “therapeutic”, with the feeling of accomplishment.

Sharing the same passion of keeping the local area clean, locals Tony and Lynsey Canty created the Facebook page, Farnworth and Kearsley Litter Pickers, where group clean-ups were arranged with the aim of making Farnworth and Kearsley a cleaner place.

Newly elected Councillor Sylvia Crossley then took over the page, having a group of six dedicated volunteers who would litter pick together regularly.

The Facebook page has become popular among locals, with over 1.5K followers to date.

The group of six volunteers has since disbanded, going solo in their own areas.

Despite this, the Farnworth and Kearsley Litter Pickers Facebook page is still active, with solo litter pickers posting to the page every day, sharing about their most recent litter pick and how many bags they were able to fill.

Local litter picker, Val Walker, often takes part in solo litter picks as she takes pride in making the local area tidy and litter-free.

She said: “I started litter picking because I saw Sylvia doing it, and I thought it was a good thing she was doing because everywhere you go, you see litter.

“It gets you out of the house and makes you feel a sense of achievement once you have done it, although it can sometimes be frustrating when you see litter again in the area you have cleared.”

She added: “It’s great to see because, as well as the Farnworth and Kearsley Litter Pickers, you also have the Bolton Borough Litter Pickers.”

The Bolton Borough Litter Pickers also have their own Facebook page, where they organise regular group clean-ups in different areas of Bolton, which local Councillor Sylvia Crossley, who also runs the Love Stoneclough Action Group, is also a part of.

If you live in Farnworth or Kearsley and want to keep the local area tidy, litter picking is a great way of taking pride in your local area, keeping active, and meeting new people who also share the same passion.
