TEN years of play-off hurt was lifted by Leigh Centurions as they consigned their 14-game losing sequence to history in the Kingstone Press Championship.
Prior to yesterday, Leigh's last win in post season saw them head into Super League in 2004 and for a time it looked like that run would continue.
Despite the hosts scoring first with a smart try from Kurt Haggerty off Ryan Brierley's pass, Doncaster struck twice in five minutes through player-boss Paul Cooke and half-back partner Richard Wilkinson. Two goals from the boot of Stewart Sanderson cancelled out Martyn Ridyard's first conversion and the visiting winger was on hand to convert a penalty to nudge Doncaster 14-6 clear.
Leigh were scrappy but eventually Haggerty kicked through to force a drop out. They then found their rhythm with Michael Platt dummying Pasqualle Dunn to go over wide out before repeating the trick minutes later.
A Champagne moment followed as Gregg McNally, Tom Armstrong and Liam Kay combined over 60 metres before Brierley ran clear for his first try of the game.
McNally then sailed clear before the hooter to open up a 24-14 half-time lead with the Centurions’ fifth try.
The third quarter was a scoreless affair before a snapped drop goal from Haggerty got Leigh rolling again; and they didn't stop. An individual run from Brierley brought up try 42 of his season and another flowing move involving Bob Beswick, Sam Barlow and Kay resulted in Armstrong getting his second to which Ridyard added his fourth goal.
Ridyard sent Armstrong haring in for their eighth try.
