Leigh Centurions 50 Doncaster 20
LEIGH Centurions claimed their 11th straight win in the Kingstone Press Championship and 14th in total to claim a piece of history.
Leigh’s Championship winning side of 1982 and the Second Division title-clinchers in 1986 were the only other two sides in to equal the clubs current run of form.
Perhaps even more impressive was the fact that Leigh scored nine tries by nine different try scorers on their way to this latest success.
It had been a tight opening with Doncaster dominating the opening 10 minutes.
A stretched Leigh defence was forced to defend three times in the opening six minutes as Stewart Sanderson, Tom Hodson and Lee Waterman all got through the line.
Leigh then scored two quick tries through Cameron Pitman and Bob Beswick with Martyn Ridyard putting the first two of his seven goal haul between the posts.
The Centurions then put down a golden plated chance and Doncaster rallied with player coach Paul Cooke sending Liam Kent over for Sanderson to goal.
Gregg McNally stretched the advantage out to 18-6 with his 10th try of the campaign before Tom Hodson pulled a try back for the visitors.
Leigh looked in control after 28 minutes when Ryan Brierley found Adam Higson at the corner but Doncaster silenced the home crowd with a try on the stroke of half-time by Dave Scott.
After an even start to the second half, Leigh cut loose to score back to back tries from Brierley and Matthew Sarsfield.
The second came off the back of an almighty charge from Sam Hopkins and although Cooke pulled back a try for his side, the Centurions found their rhythm with three tries to Kurt Haggerty, Tommy Goulden and Tom Armstrong in the final quarter to bring up the half century for the fifth time in 14 games to continue this amazing run.
