A SCHEME to get more Bolton men on their bikes has been launched.
The Blokes on Bikes (BOBs) initiative is aimed at men who either have not ridden a bicycle for a long time or have never tried it and who are not confident to join more established rides with experienced cyclists.
The first BOBs event is an introductory workshop covering basic bike skills and maintenance to be held at Leverhulme Park on Sunday from 1pm-3.30pm. Anyone is welcome and it is free to attend.
The event is being supported by Bolton Tri Club, and their coaches will be there to give expert tips and guidance whatever the rider’s ability.
Organiser Andy Bassett, of Harwood, said: “There are quite a few great schemes out there aimed at encouraging women to take up cycling and they’re doing fantastically well, but the men are being left behind.”
Andy, an Ironman and a coach with Bolton Tri Club, added: “I know from talking to people that many men want to take up cycling but lack confidence and are worried about cycling with established riders and also worried about going out in traffic.
“With BOBs, they can begin on the safety of the track at Leverhulme and learn the basic skills gradually with people of the same ability. It takes the pressure off completely.”
