BURY midfielder Stephen Dawson says last weekend’s 4-0 defeat of Gillingham will mean nothing if they don’t get a result at Accrington Stanley today.

While the 22-year-old Irish ace admits it was a relief to break a sequence of five consecutive home defeats by routing the Gills, he also realises that only a run of victories will keep Bury in the League Two promotion shake-up.

“The Gillingham win will mean nothing if we don’t get the win on Saturday,” said Dawson. “With not playing on Tuesday night, and a few teams around us winning, we need a win and that would help us back into the top four or five again.

“Accrington will be a tough game, and we are taking nothing for granted. They have lost just one of their last seven league games and they are a decent little team that work hard for each other.

“It’s a quaint little ground, but hopefully we will take a lot of fans over there and can get the result to send them home happy.”

Confidence has been restored at Gigg Lane after last weekend’s romp, but Dawson, who was relegated with Mansfield last season, admits it has been a difficult month.

“It’s been a long couple of weeks at home,” said Dawson. “The fans were getting a bit impatient, but we know now that we have two games coming up that we are capable of winning and that would throw us back into the shake-up.

“I don’t think we were playing that badly.

“There were a couple of games where we were giving away sloppy goals and giving teams the upper hand, but we were playing okay and not getting the results.

“There were a few games where we didn’t score from open play, and there were things creeping in that we were getting a little nervous about but the manager took all the pressure off us and we got a good win.

“Hopefully we can kick on now.”
