Channel 4 have their camera’s at Newbury, Newmarket and Market Rasen on Saturday, where the races of note include the Weatherbys Super Sprint and the Shadwell Stakes on the flat, with the Summer Hurdle and the Summer Chase over fences.
Starting with the Super Sprint, a five furlong dash for two-year olds, it would be foolish not to bring up the form of Richard Hannon’s stable, in particular his juveniles. Last week his youngsters won virtually every big race for two-year olds at the televised Newmarket meeting including the Cherry Hinton and the July Stakes. So considering here is another big race for juveniles it’s no surprise to see him with six runners entered, such is the form of the yard.
What is a surprise to many is that stable jockey Richard Hughes will not be riding as he has had to take a week off to help avoid a potential totting up ban that would see him miss Glorious Goodwood.
Looking at his contingent I see a certain Mr Fallon has been booked to take the ride on Jaahiz who won over six furlongs last week at York. After being hampered two out Jaahiz showed good temperament to knuckle down for a three-length win. While he ran a little green I find it interesting he is now tackling the minimum trip for the first time.
Ryan Moore rode Jaahiz last week but today takes the ride on Reckless Reward who was last seen when finishing second in the Norfolk Stakes at Ascot. The son of the Australian super sprinter Choisir is all speed and I would expect to see him go well here.
In the Shadwell stakes I think Henry Cecil’s Markab will take the beating if producing the form that saw him chase Equiano home in the Kings Stand Stakes at Ascot. I also note Doncaster Rover is entered and as he always runs his race I wouldn’t put anyone off having a punt on him as he truly is a genuine sort.
Market Rasen hosts a strong jump card for a summer meeting so I have no doubt the jump fans will be looking forward to place a few bets. Looking at the cards before the final decs are in, I note that an old favourite of mine, Stan, is entered in the Summer Plate handicap chase. I will be putting my usual couple of quid on him but believe it’s worth noting he was pulled up on Sunday. That said knowing Venetia Williams there is no way he will run if showing any ill effects from that run.
Sunday has the Irish Oaks over at the Curragh and, in my Ante-Post book, I have joint favourites in Snow Fairy and Rosanara at 7/2, with the late money coming for the French-trained Rosanara. With the same connections as the great Zarkava it’s worth noting the money has come for this filly – will she be another successful French raider?
