WANDERERS have confirmed the appointment of Craig Rowson as the club’s new head kit man, with ex-Blackpool striker Brett Ormerod joining the club as his assistant.
Ted Moulden is set to end a long association with the Whites to join a top Premier League side in the coming weeks, having initially passed through the club’s academy as a player.
Rowson joined the backroom after Moulden was promoted to the top job four years ago, and will be assisted by Ormerod, who played nearly 500 career games for the likes of Blackpool, Preston and Wrexham.
Confirming the move, Evatt believes the 48-year-old will be a good addition to a backroom which already includes his former Bloomfield Road team-mates Matt Gilks and Stephen Crainey.
He said: “Ted has been a valued part of our club, he’s the kit man, someone who is closest to the players and who they rely on a lot. It’s a tough job, a big one, and Ted has been given a big opportunity.
“Craig has been with him all along, and he is an obvious choice. We all respect the job Ted has done, but we need to replace him quite quickly. Finding someone who knows the role and duties needed is quite challenging and it has to be someone you trust impeccably around the players and the staff.
“They need to know what the game looks like, the pressures of the game, and for me, Brett ticks all of those boxes. He is an ex-Premier League footballer, played in an FA Cup final, so if he applied for the job then we have to take it seriously.
“He will be a huge positive for the players. I know him as a character, he is bubbly and positive, the lads will respond to that in the current climate. And also he is a centre-forward who has scored goals at the top level, so if ours want to pick his brains aside from ‘can you clean my boots please?’ then why wouldn’t we take that opportunity.
“I know him, can trust him, I know what he is going to be like with the players. It is a big job and I am delighted he has taken it. Craig will lead it and Brett will assist him, building on the great job Ted did.”
Ormerod has had some coaching experience in non-league with the likes of AFC Fylde and Bamber Bridge and has also been working with BBC Radio Lancashire as a pundit.
Evatt confirmed he will be available for any games in which two kit staff are needed, and that he could be make his first appearance at Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
“Craig is head kit man, Brett will assist,” he added. “We don’t take two kit men for every single game at the moment, so there may be times when he is not needed. His role is to help, sort the kit, organise, that’s it.”
