As storm Bert battered the UK, we headed for the Toughsheet facing a storm of our own. The Doombar deliberations revolved around one subject; would we get a reaction from the team to our battering at Stockport, before the international break?
That was the problem against Steve Bruce’s Blackpool, a stern test at the best of times. The Seasiders themselves had a lot to prove in their nearest derby match, arriving on the back of a 7-match winless run.
The Bolton crowd were deathly quiet throughout the first half, reflecting the tensions of the occasion, with lots of empty seats, perhaps from no-shows due to the inclement weather or some disgruntled fans starting to vote with their feet.
In the first half, quite frankly we did not get the response we were looking for. We were awful. We were flat, we were second to every ball against a rugged Blackpool and a poor referee, who was determined to give us nowt. Half time was very downcast as we nibbled our lukewarm pasties.
Whatever was said at half time by Ian Evatt worked as we came out a different team. We battled from the start, led by our captain and tore into Blackpool. Suddenly we were winning second balls and were on the front foot at last. It was no surprise when the returning George Thomason fired home the equaliser.
We should have been in front when Dion Charles hit one from the edge of the box, which the officials somehow deemed to be offside. Victor Adeboyejo interfering with play, being something of an oxymoron these days. However, justice was done in added time as Aaron Collins coolly slotted home the winner. I do like happy endings.
So, where does that leave us? Such is modern society, that the doomongers are out and about with barely a third of the season gone. Every setback is magnified into a disaster because of the pressure everybody at the club has put on ourselves. Promotion is a demand. Anything less will not be acceptable. We are in the mix and we have to keep it going, battling through the inevitable setbacks on the way. Players are coming back from injury , we have won seven of our last 10 league matches.
We are gathering momentum. Let’s keep it going.
