Atherton Collieries’ fine form continued with a 2-1 win in NPL West against Wythenshawe Town at the Dreams2Reality Stadium on Friday night.

It was Tom Bentham who opened the scoring following a solid team move from the Collieries.

Beginning with Aaron Dwyer, the ball was worked through the final third through Toba Obitayo and Bobby Bjork, the latter of whom produced a perfect cross for ‘The Butcher’ to head home.

The first half was a gritty affair, with the referee producing a solid display as the visitors made life difficult with a series of niggly fouls, the worst of which from Nicholas Hepple on Toba Obitayo seeing a deserved red card.

Dwyer, whose recent signing has made a clear impact on the Black and Whites frontline, continued to show his worth with the Colls’ second goal.

Danny Lambert produced a killer ball to the forward with the Wythenshawe defence out of position, which was capitalised on by the winger who drilled home at the near post.

It was another electric first half from the hosts, but the game petered into a stalemate in the second half as the visitors showed fight in an attempt to take a share of the spoils.

George Boyd, a former star for Burnley and Scotland, produced the moment of the game with a long-range rocket into Sol Honor’s goal, but it was mere consolation for the visitors as the Colls otherwise held firm.

The win takes the Collieries up to fourth in the league form guide, with a points-per-game over the last few months that offers a spark of hope the end of the Black and Whites’ low positioning in the league table may soon be around the corner.

The Colls are back in action tomorrow night with a trip to Trafford, looking to avenge this season’s FA Trophy exit against one of the league’s play-off contenders, before travelling to Nantwich on Saturday.

The Black and Whites are in Friday night action once again in their next home game, facing Vauxhall at the Dreams2Reality Stadium on November 29.
