Josh Sheehan reckons his experiences at Wanderers have prepared him well as he aims to nail down a place in the Wales side.

The midfielder has been a key figure for the Whites since returning from his ACL injury a couple of season ago.

Sheehan received plenty of praise following his impressive display against Montenegro during the previous international break.

Despite being one of several members of the squad playing below the Championship, the 29-year-old is confident he can hold his own on the international stage.

“I am a technical type of player. I feel like the jump, personally, isn't as big as maybe it is more the physical side," he told Wales Online.

“I feel like I am good enough to play as high a level as I can, I more than hold my own in training. It is not something I think about because I believe in my own ability.

“I have had a couple of serious injuries which is just part and parcel, there is nothing I can do about that and nothing I can change. I believe in myself and I believe in my ability, I will always back myself regardless.

“I have always believed in myself, my family have believed in me as well. We have always known what I was capable of doing. I feel like the last few years, I have been able to show that by being more consistent in my game.

"Football sometimes is about being in the right team, at the right time, in the right place. I feel like over the last couple of years it has been the right team, the right time, the right style of play.”

Sheehan got the chance to captain his country near the end of Rob Page’s tenure and has remained in the thinking under new boss Craig Bellamy.

The Bolton man will be hoping to get more minutes on the pitch during the upcoming Nations League matches against Turkey and Iceland.

“It was not something I ever thought about," he added. "For me, it was all about putting on the shirt. That was something I wanted to achieve as I dreamt about it.

"Getting the armband is something I will always be thankful for, I will never forget it.

“I had a good season for my club last year and every time I put on the Wales shirt, I just want to perform and show the Welsh fans what I'm about – that they can trust me when I get the chance.”
