Gethin Jones made his comeback from injury as Wanderers’ B Team were beaten by Huddersfield in the Central League Cup.

Jones got 45 minutes under his belt at Lostock as the defender steps up his recovery from a knee injury suffered at the start of pre-season.

Andy Taylor’s side were beaten 5-2 defeat despite goals from Ajay Weston and Ben Andreucci during the second half.

There was little to separate the sides for most of the first half but the visitors seized control during a ruthless five-minute spell before the break.

Zak Abbott got the opener with an instinctive finish after Conor Falls’ strike had been blocked, with Luke Hutchinson wrong footed.

Dan Vost doubled the lead moments later, picking out the bottom corner with a low drive after the initial free kick was smashed into the wall.

Bolton started the second half strongly and got back into the contest when Weston pounced on a poor clearance by Francis Hurl before finding the top corner with a superb strike.

But as the young Whites pushed for an equaliser, they were undone by another quickfire double from the Terriers.

Jay Sway drilled a strike in off the woodwork and Hutchinson was then caught on the ball by Cam Ashia, who managed to divert the ball over the line.

Andreucci pulled one back after latching onto Trevon Bryan’s pass and keeping his cool to fire past the goalkeeper.

Huddersfield wrapped up the result in the final stages as Abbott tapped home from close range following a dangerous corner.

Wanderers have now taken four points from their opening three group matches as they battle for a place in the knockout rounds.

Taylor confirmed after the final whistle that the plan for Jones was always to come off after 45 minutes.

“Early on they put one in behind and he had a good 30, 40 yard sprint to test himself,” the B Team boss explained.

“That is good and because it was a decent level game, it is better for him. It would have been no good for him to play in a game at a friendly pace, it was a high tempo and great to see him back after a while.

“He has come through it unscathed which is the main thing and hopefully that puts him in good stead to start threatening the first team squad sooner rather than later.”

Taylor added: “In terms of the whole day – being involved in the matchday meetings and around the changing room – it is invaluable experience for the young players to be around the senior pros.

“You pick up little golden nuggets of how they go about their work without even realising it – in the changing room, in the warm up and after the game.

“The more exposure we can get the senior pros to our young lads, it is invaluable experience.”
