Dave McNabb hopes some rare time on the training pitch will help his Bury side keep building momentum.

The Shakers take on Pilkington this weekend on the back of victories against Charnock Richard and Colne in the league.

“The feeling is really good,” McNabb told The Bolton News. “Obviously, this week we have a good opportunity to train Tuesday and Thursday with no midweek game for the first time in a long time.

“It has been good and the lads are ready to go. It is going to be a tough game on Saturday but one we are looking forward to.”

He added: “It is part and parcel of playing at this level, but it doesn’t help in terms of the workload and number of games the players are playing in such a short space of time.

“Obviously, the lads are working as well which is really difficult. From a management and coaching point of view, it means that contact time is available.

“What we do is generally a bit of recovery because of the amount of work that has gone through the lads’ legs.

“It is difficult, we would love to be able to train twice a week and spend more time on some of the minor details. At the moment, we haven’t really been able to do that an awful lot this season.”

McNabb added Djavan Pedro to his strike department last week and the forward came straight into the starting line-up against Colne.

The Shakers boss felt it was an area they needed strengthen, having been without Ruben Jerome through injury in recent weeks.

“DJ is a top quality striker for this level and above,” he continued. “He is quick, powerful, aggressive and can play with his back to goal.

“Hopefully, he will provide some much needed competition in the frontline and hopefully get some goals.”

Bury are the only side in the division still unbeaten ahead of Saturday’s fixture at Gigg Lane.

McNabb has been encouraged by back-to-back clean sheets and is keen to maintain a solid base in the coming weeks.

“The Colne game was a tough game, the conditions and pitch were challenging,” he explained.

“Colne came with a gameplan to try to sit in and counter attack, and they did cause us a few problems early on before we took control.

“We probably missed too many chances and it should have been more than two, but we are really pleased to get another clean sheet.

“That is something we want to try to enforce a little bit more as the season progresses. There are loads of positives to take but also much more work to do.”
