We headed for the Toughsheet under late October blue skies as the clouds of discontent were gathering. The Doombar deliberations were split over the performance and result at Birmingham.
Most fans thought that we had been too defensive and showed them too much respect and we didn’t take some half decent chances to get something out of the match. Fans were questioning whether we can get up there to challenge for promotion.
We seem to be at a crossroad where we need to start gathering momentum and today’s match was critical against the Posh, another side fancied to do well but has had a disappointing start, languishing like us in the wrong half of League 1.
There was mixed news on the injury front as Eoin Toal returned but Kyle Dempsey missed out. Another 20,000+ crowd roared the Wanderers on from the start and we responded by taking the game to Peterborough.
We huffed and we puffed but we couldn’t break the Posh defence down with their aptly named goalie, Nick Bilokapic blocking everything that came his way.
The only save Luke Southwood had to make was from Rico Santos. We upped a gear in the second half, without making the breakthrough, until very late into stoppage time, when the referee finally awarded us a penalty after turning down a couple of good shouts previously.
Up stepped Dion Charles to do the business but their goalie pulled off a great double save before Klaidi Lolos bundled it into the net, to everyone in white’s relief. Ironically, we had won in Fergie time against Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough.
It was a good performance and eventually a good result. It is never easy being a Bolton fan as we try and keep the faith. But keep the faith we must, as we try and build from here.
Every match is important as we try to challenge for promotion. Expectations are high this season and it is up to Ian Evatt and the players to meet those expectations. Every performance, every result will be micro-analysed by the fans, every step of the way.
We are only just a quarter of the way through the season, but the pressure has been on from the start.
We need to stick together and keep those points coming in. Every match is its own challenge, so let’s tackle them one at a time, starting with Stevenage on Tuesday.
