Wanderers Women are looking forward to getting back on the pitch against Tranmere Rovers this weekend.

Myles Smith’s side were due to face Morecambe Reserves last weekend but the tie was called off at short notice.

Instead, the squad got some valuable time on the training pitch and are now hoping to reap the rewards against a Tranmere side who knocked them out of the FA Cup last month.

“Originally, as a group we found it a little bit frustrating,” Smith told The Bolton News. “We put in lots of planning and preparation so for it to get called off less than 24 hours before the game, it was a bit frustrating but it is one of those things we have to deal with.

“We tried to react in the best way possible and I thought we did. We came together as a team and got some good work done on the training pitch so massive credit to the team.”

He added: “Tranmere are very aggressive and intense in the way they like to press, they don’t give you time on the ball.

“They like to play quite direct and will look to exploit the space that we leave behind. They will certainly give us a decent game.

“The last time we played them they were aggressive and not scared to put a tackle in or leave one on you, which is the other side of football that some of our players have to get used to.

“In that sense, it is going to be a good learning curve for us. They are a team who take the game to you and we have to be ready from the very first minute.”

Sunday’s fixture is being played at Chorley’s Victory Park, with the side’s usual home at Atherton Colls unavailable.

Smith’s side have won their opening eight matches in the league and are aiming to carry that momentum into the cup competitions.

“Every single game of football, whether it is in the league, cup or a friendly – we want to win,” he continued. Obviously, the league is our priority but we want to win as much silverware as we can.

“You also have a duty – the fans come out to watch you and especially this time of the year, when it’s a bit cold and windy – you have a duty to put on a good performance and win the match for them.

“Momentum is a massive thing in football. We managed to build momentum with four games back-to-back at the start of the season, and that helped us kick on and get more results.

“At the moment we have momentum and we want to continue that as much as possible. I do think we have a group of players with enough character where, if we do get a bad result here or there, they can kick on and not let it affect momentum.

“But we want to win games, it breeds confidence in the camp. We need to keep the players grounded and hungry.”

Sunday’s match kicks off at 2pm and, as always, admission is FREE for all supporters.
