For ex-pats and holidaymakers living in and visiting sunny Benidorm one boozer is providing a little taste of home.
For among the many places to eat and drink is a Bolton Wanderers-themed bar which is going from “strength to strength” as it approaches its third birthday.
The Embankment, owned by diehard Whites fans and married couple, D’Reena Pennington-Brown and Richard Brown, is brimming with memorabilia from the club, including scarfs, flags and a wall of shirts.
On a matchday, fans of the League One side flock to the bar and free shots are handed out whenever Wanderers score.
The bar is named after a now-demolished terrace at the historic club's former ground, Burnden Park.
D’Reena,61, who grew up in Darcy Lever, said: “My husband originally set it up with his mate because he’s a massive fan.
“During the week it's just a normal bar, except for all the Bolton decorations, and we’re just opposite a campsite so people come in to drink.
“But on matchdays, any Wanderers fan near Benidorm will come to the bar, they descend on the bar.
“It’s funny, me and my husband were in London when we played Arsenal and we overheard some fans talking about the bar.
“They asked if we knew the bar, and we said, ‘yeah, we’re the owners!’”
The couple now live in Horwich, a stone’s throw from Bolton’s Toughsheet Stadium where they have season tickets, after moving back to England.
Although D’Reena and Richard still return to the Costa Blanca to oversee the bar, it is run by a “fab” team full-time.
D’Reena added: “We’ve got a Spurs supporter and a Liverpool supporter running it out there at the moment.
“But, the Bolton fans out there have warmed to them and they are brilliant.
“It’s safe to say they are honouree Bolton fans now.”
According to the 61-year-old, her favourite Bolton item in the bar is a flag displaying the names of Bolton supporters who have died.
She added: “It’s nice because people will come into the bar and see the names of their relatives who have passed.”
Another popular addition to the bar was a donation from Wanderers legend Warwick Rimmer.
When asked about the current season for Wanderers, D’Reena added: "We're not in the best place at the moment as a club but we're hoping for a good season, fingers crossed."
Up the Whites!
