There was double success for Halliwell ABC when two of their boxers won national development titles.
Sam Akinsete, fighting in the 80kg Senior event, and super-heavyweight, Ely Muya, both triumphed at the England Boxing/Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) National Development Championships.
Akinsete, nicknamed ‘The Sniper’, delivered an unforgettable performance against Sam Carr, son of former professional Cornelius Carr.
The Halliwell fighter’s display of skill and heart throughout the tournament was nothing short of spectacular, with many officials naming him the fighter of the tournament.
Meanwhile, ‘Juggernaut’ Muya, boxing at 91kg-plus, took on Finchley’s heavyweight prospect Anthony Ibekwe.
Despite Ibekwe’s devastating power, Muya outboxed him, showing his exceptional ability and pushing his opponent back as the fight unfolded.
With seven senior boxers entering the competition, Halliwell ABC, based at the Elite Gym, finished with five North West champions and two National title winners - in two of the toughest weight divisions.
It is a huge achievment for the Bolton-based club and adds to Halliwell ABC’s long legacy of champions.
Club coach Alex Matvienko was naturally delighted and said: “What a weekend of huge achievements - having two national development champions from our club which is a major feat.
“The team is growing and growing and this will inspire so many more of our youngsters from our gym and other clubs.
“Sam, at 80kg light-heavyweight, and Ely, 91-plus super heavyweight, fought in hard divisions and it was very impressive to view and we’re very proud.”
Akinsete said: “It was a great tournament. I fought the best in the country, I give all glory to God he fought for me.
“I want to thank all my coaches for the hard work and time they put into me.
“My coaches are like a cheat code in the ring.
“I beat a good kid from Repton boxing gym in the semi-finals.
“There is no better feeling than winning a national title with my brother Ely Muya.”
Muya was equally pleased and added: “First of all all glory to God, if not for him I wouldn’t be in this position I’m in today.
“Secondly, I want to thank all my coaches and team-mates for all the hard work they put into me, they have really helped me with my mindset and made me a better fighter.
“Going into the final I beat a knockout artist, who knocked out a good opponent within minutes of the first round.
“He also trains at Anthony Joshua’s old boxing club.
“I was so determined that I could beat him and I didn’t let the knockout stop me from winning.”
