Former Wanderer Paul Robinson has taken up the role of assistant coach at Championship club Watford.

Robinson joins Tom Cleverley’s backroom staff at Vicarage Road, with Javier Pereira departing the Hornets.

The 45-year-old began his playing career at Watford and went on to have a couple of spells with the Whites, initially joining on loan from West Brom in 2009 before making the move permanent several months later.

He has held coaching roles at Millwall and Birmingham and will now be hoping to help the Hornets build on a positive start to the Championship campaign, currently sitting sixth in the table.

“It is a dream come true to come back to the club where it all started for me,” he told the club channels.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get through the door and can’t wait to get started and help Tom and Damon (Lathrope), and try and move this club forward.

“Tom just picked the phone up and asked what I was doing. When Tom calls and Watford comes calling, it is very hard to turn those opportunities down.

“It is just an exciting time, it is great to be a part of it. “It was a no-brainer, you hear a lot of good things about what Tom’s doing and I want to be a part of that.

“I want to help him, I want to pass on my knowledge. I want to help the players as well, we have got a good group of players here.”

Watford are back in action this weekend when they head to Kenilworth Road to take on struggling Luton Town.

“We have identified Robbo as the perfect person to come in and help us achieve our goals,” Cleverley added.

“Defensively is somewhere we need to improve, set-pieces also. I feel like Robbo’s experience as a player and as a coach… in the environments he has been at, they have always had top defensive records and top set-piece records.

“Although he will be assisting us in every way he can, those are two areas where I feel he comes in and can improve us straight away. It is a perfect appointment for us.”
