Former Wanderer Declan John has made a positive impression while on trial with League Two club Swindon.

John has been without a club since his Bolton release at the end of last season. The Welshman spent last term on loan at Salford.

Swindon boss Mark Kennedy has been impressed by the full-back in recent weeks but was coy over the prospect of making him a permanent member of the squad.

“All of it is true apart from trialist of the week because he has been with us for about a month,” he told Swindon Advertiser.

“He is a really good player and I don’t know how he has not got a club, I don’t know the why because I have not gotten into that.

“Dec has been with us for about a month now and has done really well. He is a really good player, we really like him, he lives locally, and we have given him an opportunity for him to train and get fit.

“If something presents itself going forward then he is somebody that we would like to talk to and I know that we are a club that he wants to play for, hence why he has been here for so long.

“He is here on merit, he is here because we like him, he likes coming here, will we get something done? I don’t know.”

John was one of three senior players released over the summer along with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Cameron Jerome.

The 29-year-old helped Wanderers clinch promotion from League Two and played in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy final against Plymouth.

Swindon have had a tough start to the League Two campaign, winning one of their opening six matches.

The Robins currently sit 18th in the table ahead of Saturday’s clash with Carlisle at the County Ground.
