Wanderers youngster Nelson Khumbeni is enjoying his loan at Accrington Stanley despite a tough start to the League Two campaign.

Khumbeni headed to the Wham Stadium on a season-long loan over the summer in the search of regular minutes.

The 21-year-old has made six appearances for the Reds so far, coming off the bench for the second half against Crewe at the weekend.

Khumbeni played under Ged Brannan at Morecambe last term and the 52-year-old is now back at Accrington as John Doolan’s assistant.

“I always want to know so much and when it comes to having Ged, John, Faz (Rawson) – people who I have previously worked with – it makes it 10 times easier,” the youngster told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“Asking questions of Seamus (Conneely) and Shaun (Whalley) makes it so much easier as well because they know what the club is all about.

“I am so early into my career. I played a few games last season but I want more and more each year.

“Being able to take on information from people who have been involved in it for so long, it is good and you learn new things.”

He added: “Since I first came here, I have felt welcome and all the new lads who came in felt welcome from the off. It is a good environment.”

Doolan’s side have taken two points from their opening six games and currently find themselves in the drop zone.

“We have been playing well but the flip of the coin has not been on our side in certain games, sometimes we haven’t turned up,” Khumbeni explained.

“We know it is down to us to make those results count. It is early in the season but it is helpful to get those results early.

“The league can be open really quickly and from what I learnt last season, you can play one or two games and all of a sudden go from 16th to the play-offs.

“As soon as we get a win under our belts, I feel like things will start to ease off a bit. Then we have to build as the games keep coming.”
