A trio of Lostockers headed to Newcastle to take part in the iconic Great North Run and all returned good times.
The race sees 60,000 participants run 13.1 miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to South Shields and is famous for it’s fantastic support all along the course.
Jo McManus was the first Lostocker to pass the renowned finish line in an amazing 1hr 47mins 15secs, and she was followed by Chris Baker, in 1:53:53, and Stephen Davies. in 2:48:17.
The previous Thursday, Lostock AC members embarked on another challenge - the gruelling Yorkshire Man.
This is an off-road marathon across the South Pennines with the 26.2 miles covering a dizzying elevation gain of 3,300 feet. The rain was not kind, and this made the race even more demanding as some paths turned to rivers and participants were required to wade through the water.
Sally McCoy, Beverly Atherton-McKenna, Janet Rhodes and Heather Soden completed the challenge together in an impressive 6:21:16. Mike Ernill and Kerry Jackson took part in the team challenge, finishing in 6:39:39 and securing 10th place in the mixed couples.
The Grisedale Horseshoe Fell Race 2024 was a special race for Lostock members as Tony Marlow was the race director, Josie Greenhalgh was the tail runner and John Smith was number checker at the finish line.
This was the third Lakes race in the three-race series, covering 10 miles with 5,000 feet of ascent and starting in Glenridding and visiting Birkhouse Moor, Catstye Cam, Helvellyn, Grisedale Tarn and ending in St Sunday Crag. Rob Sharkey and Markus Shuttleworth ran the race, enjoying the glorious weather and beautiful views all around the course. Sharkey was first across the finish line in 2:50:15, followed by Shuttleworth, in 3:28:11.
Gareth Pratt and Louise Jeffrey-Read headed to the Lakeland Trails Keswick challenges. Pratt defeated the 10k, with 1,000 feet of climbing, in 1:00:46, achieving third in his age category. Despite two nasty falls, Jeffrey-Read was able to complete the 15k in 1:52:22.
At the latest instalment of the Central Lancashire Grand Prix, the Quays Blackleach Five-Mile trail race, takes in two laps of Blackleach Park. The first Lostocker to finish was Andy Laycock, in 39:46, followed by Jo McManus (40:05), who was second in her age category, Anthony Maxwell (40:56), who was third in his age category, Rachel Hancock (40:40), Chris Baker (42:52), Sheila Garewal (49:44) and Gillian Caldwell (53:24).
