IAN Evatt does not believe any team will run away with the League One title this season.

The Wanderers boss is confident that his side can quickly repair the damage caused by a slow start but does not foresee any team breaking the 90-point barrier.

Pre-season promotion favourites Birmingham City are among three clubs who remain undefeated, Wrexham and Stockport County being the others.

The Whites have lost two of their first four league games and currently sit 18th in the table.

But Evatt looks back at his own experiences at the Bolton helm for evidence that nothing is settled at this stage of the campaign.

“Last season we won the first three games 3-0, 3-0 and 3-1 but we didn’t get promoted,” he said. “Everyone will say we should have done, I accept that, but I think it shows that it doesn’t make or break your season.

“Everyone will remind me of my first season here when we ended up getting promoted. We lost the first five, didn’t we? And we’re doing a bit better than that right now.

“For us it is just about staying calm, staying present. I don’t think we will see a 90-plus point season from anybody. I think this is going to be a really competitive league and everyone has improved, we are looking to improve as well.

“I think we will show that but I accept we have not necessarily shown our best yet. We just have to believe that our best is yet to come and, for me, that is exciting.”

Evatt and his players return to the training ground after a short break and will now begin to prepare in earnest for Saturday's home game against Huddersfield Town.

Accepting that improvement is needed after a slow start which has raised frustration among the supporters, the Bolton boss hopes the arrival of “four or five” players back from injury will help to strengthen his options in the coming weeks.

He is also banking on extra time on the training ground helping to bed down the formation changes he introduced in the summer.

“We have to find the right balance,” he said. “What works with who, what system works, we can flit in-between three-box-three and 3-5-2. I still see us creating chances, getting to the final third a lot and having a lot of shots at goal and dangerous attacks but we are just not finishing them off.

“I do think we are moving the ball quicker now, which is good to see.

“I honestly think we will get better. We are frustrated, everyone is frustrated and I think that is why we have had the reaction we have done but we are trying really hard and we want to be good. We want to be consistently good.

“When the criticism comes we have to take it and swallow it. We are part of an industry where everyone has an opinion on what we are doing. We have to keep our belief because to play the way we want to play we need confidence, so we need to keep backing ourselves and working really hard on the training ground to make things better.”
