Jay Matete says joining Wanderers was a “no-brainer” and is eager to kick on after a tough spell with injuries.
The midfielder arrived at the Toughsheet Community Stadium on a season-long loan from Sunderland and has made four appearances for the Whites so far, including a start against Mansfield in the Carabao Cup first round.
Matete, who saw a loan spell at Oxford last term hampered by injury, admits it is a “big year” in his career.
“Obviously, I want to kick on now,” he said. “I had my injury struggles last year but I have been given an opportunity to come and prove myself at a big club like Bolton. It was a no-brainer for me.”
The 23-year-old came off the bench in the 2-0 defeat at Charlton, replacing George Thomason for the final 20 minutes.
Matete admitted there was disappointment in the camp following the result at the Valley but believes they can learn from it.
“Obviously, we wanted to come and get the three points, that was the aim,” he added. “We knew what was coming, coming into the game, so it is disappointing overall.
“We prepared really well throughout the week and knew exactly what was coming. I thought we started well but then obviously made a mistake that led to a goal, and from there it becomes a bit more tricky.
“There is massive potential in the squad, we have talented players and a good togetherness within the group. We will put it behind us, learn from it and it will put us in good stead.
“There is a long road ahead and we have many more games. We want to put it right.”
Matete could be involved against Shrewsbury in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night as Wanderers look to book their place in the third round.
There is also the visit of Exeter in the league coming up, and the midfielder is determined to seize any opportunities that come his way.
“That is what comes with playing for a big club like Bolton, you are expected to win every game,” he said.
“We have to take the pressure, thrive off it and not shy away. We are looking forward to the week coming up.
“(Shrewsbury) is an opportunity for us boys who maybe haven’t got the number of minutes we want to impress the gaffer and show what we can do. We are looking forward to it.”
