WANDERERS could shed “two or three” players by the close of the transfer window, says Ian Evatt.

With a fortnight to go before deadline day, the Whites are now considering how to trim the squad before it is officially registered with the EFL in September.

Evatt has not ruled out adding to the eight signings he has already made in the summer should one of his longer-term targets become available but the club is now concentrating on loan and permanent moves for those who will not be guaranteed first team football in the coming months.

Goalkeeper Joel Coleman is believed to be on the list of players made available, having been bumped down the pecking order after Luke Southwood’s arrival from Cheltenham Town.

Evatt said of his plans for the next couple of weeks: “We’re always open to improving the squad and I am pretty comfortable with where we are at right now,” he said. “We think there will be two or three exits, potentially.

“If someone or something we are monitoring becomes available to us then we can act on it quickly.

“At the moment I am unsure whether we will add to it or not but as always we are looking at the market and seeing what happens.”

Wanderers have emerged victorious in each of their opening two games and will look to maintain their record on Sunday as they welcome Wrexham to the Toughsheet Stadium for the first time.

Evatt accepts that his team has not yet hit full stride after a disrupted summer but he remains pleased with the start they have made.

“We have started with two wins, one away from home and then one in the cup having made nine changes, so I am quite happy with that,” he said.

“Everyone tells me about play-off hangovers etc, and obviously from how difficult that experience was to come back and start with two wins is something the players should be proud of.

“Have we played to our maximum? No. But the players have found a way to win and that is what’s important.

“If you asked the crowd I am sure they would rather us be at our maximum when points really do matter at the end of the season rather than at the very start.

“And because of the disruption in pre-season with injuries and the late recruits we are going to make slower progress. We will get gradually and progressively better.”
