Phil Parkinson is looking forward to being back at Wanderers but insists the focus is on Wrexham.

Parkinson guided the Whites to promotion to the Championship and then oversaw a memorable win against Nottingham Forest to beat the drop on the final day.

Along with Steve Parkin, he stepped down in 2019 and has since guided Wrexham to back-to-back promotions from the National League.

"I think when you go back to an old club, it always has that added importance," the former Bolton boss told The Leader.

"But for me, it is not about me and Steve Parkin going back there. It is just about the team and us continuing where we left off at the weekend and building on that.”

He added: "The promotion there was in very difficult circumstances because the club was in an embargo.

"I always think keeping them up the next year in the Championship, when there was still an embargo in a really high-spending division, was a great achievement.

"It went a bit sour after that because the financial problems really hit hard on the club but all in all, great memories there with the promotion and staying in the division."

There will be a bumper crowd at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, with more than 25,000 tickets sold for the fixture.

"The Bolton stadium is a great arena, especially if you get to the late teens crowd-wise," said the 56-year-old.

"It is a fantastic atmosphere and with the Wrexham army travelling down, it will be a great occasion and we are really looking forward to it.”

"I don't Bolton have spent as much as Birmingham but it won't be far off it," Parkinson continued.

"They are a big club in the division. They have had two near misses in the play-offs and will be expectant there, but we will be ready and pick the best team we feel can give us the best chance of getting the win."
