HANNAH Kelly played her part in a real ‘team effort’ as Team GB won a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay final in Paris.

While the 21-year-old Bolton Harrier was not part of the quartet that finished third behind USA and Netherlands, she helped Team GB reach the final with an impressive run in Friday’s heat.

Victoria Ohuruogu, Laviai Nielsen, Nicole Yeargin and Amber Anning ran a British-record time of 3mins 19.72secs to book their place on the podium.

It meant that Team GB were the only nation to win medals in all five relay events - the mixed 4x400m, the men’s and women’s 4x100m and both 4x400m races.

While Team GB change their line-up completely for the final Nielsen - who ran the second leg - was quick to praise Bury-born Hannah and the other three runners Yemi Mary John, Jodie Williams and her sister Lina Nielsen for the part they played.

“I am so happy that we have got five out of five medals,” she told BBC Sport. “I think it is such a great representation of where we are in the UK across all the sprints.

“Shout out to Yemi Mary John, Hannah Kelly Jodie Williams and Lina Nielsen because Amber (Anning) was running her incredible final (on Saturday) it meant that they could run and we could have fresher legs (for the final). So thanks to them, it is a whole team effort so thanks so much.”

Anning, who finished fifth in the 400m final, said: “I felt good. This was more about the team. I did my part, I knew we had a great opportunity to get a medal so this is for the girls. I just wanted to get it round and it was close at the end but I just had a little bit of a surge and brought it home.”

In Friday’s heats, Hannah, competing in her first Olympic Games, ran the second leg in 50.52secs as the team recorded a season’s best time of 3mins 24.72secs.
