Wanderers have made Jay Matete their sixth signing of the summer on a season-long loan from Sunderland.
The 23-year-old bolsters Ian Evatt's midfield options ahead of the upcoming League One campaign.
Matete started out at Fleetwood and also had a loan spell at Grimsby, coming up against Bolton during the League Two promotion campaign.
His performances earned a move to the Stadium of Light in 2022, where he helped Sunderland win promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.
The midfielder also had a loan spell at Plymouth and was part of the squad that won the League One title under Steven Schumacher, lining up against the Whites in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley.
Matete spent the second half of last term at Oxford where he added a third promotion to his CV, although he was not involved in the play-off final against Wanderers.
Ian Evatt said: “Jay is a player that we have been aware of for a long time. I first took notice of him when he was at Grimsby at the end of our League Two promotion season, and we have been following his career ever since.
“We were interested in him before he went to Sunderland, so we’re very excited to be working with him now.
“He has been with teams that have been promoted out of this league for the last three years, so he has good experience in knowing what it takes, and he brings a different profile and skill set to our other midfielders.
"He knows a lot of our staff well too, including Stephen Crainey who worked with him at Fleetwood.
“For Jay, it’s a great challenge and opportunity to show what he can do in a Bolton shirt.”
Matete follows Chris Forino, Luke Southwood, Klaidi Lolos, Scott Arfield and Szabolcs Schön in heading to the Toughsheet Community Stadium this summer.
He will go straight into training with the first-team squad ahead of Saturday's League One opener at Leyton Orient.
