WANDERERS (3-4-3).
NATHAN BAXTER…7.
A couple of smart saves when Port Vale finally turned up in the second half. Tidy for the most part and looking confident.
EOIN TOAL…7.
Looked comfortable against a very decent player in Curtis and also played a key pass for Charles in the second half. Like him on the right side of the three.
RICARDO SANTOS…7.
Had to keep on his toes against the big number 10 Lorent Tolaj but Santos has got progressively better in pre-season and is now looking back to something like his best. Happy days.
JACK IREDALE…7.
Another player looking sharper after coming back from injury. Very vocal at the back and helped new signing Szabolcs Schön get in line, when needed.
JOSH DACRES-COGLEY…7.5.
Has been smart in pre-season, up a level, almost. Provided a superb cross for Collins early on and got into some good positions later in the first half too.
JOSH SHEEHAN…7.5.
Haven’t got the official stats, unfortunately, but didn’t look like the Welshman wasted a single pass. Seems to enjoy this new shape and pressing strategy.
GEORGE THOMASON…7.5.
We know he can run, tackle and press – but the tactical tweaks this summer have asked a little more of Thomason on the ball too. He has risen to the challenge.
SZABOLCS SCHON…7.
Considering this was just one training session in, you could see the Hungarian was happy in this company. Technically sound. Looks like he will be a popular player.
SCOTT ARFIELD…7.5.
The Wanderers fanbase might have underestimated how big an impact the former Rangers man can have this season. Took charge once again.
VICTOR ADEBOYEJO…8.
The goal was scrappy – but he more than deserved his luck, having dragged his marker around the pitch all day. Looks like he is loving the role of attacking point.
AARON COLLINS…7.
Took his early goal, dropped into pockets of space and worked well with Schön. A clever player who seems more than happy to switch roles.
Subs: Morley 64 (for Sheehan) – Quiet cameo but looks in good shape 6.
Charles 64 (for Adeboyejo) – Great finish, and looks at his sharpest for a while 6.5.
Lolos 64 (for Arfield) – Has had a very good pre-season. One to watch. 6.
Conway 64 (for Schön) – Has stepped up a grade this summer 6.
Nlundulu 68 (for Collins) – Didn’t get involved too much but has had a decent summer 6.
Johnston 68 (for Iredale) – Another step along the road 6.
Matheson 82 (for Dacres-Cogley) – Put himself around 6.
Subs not used: Coleman, Southwood, Forino.
Referee – Scott Simpson 6/10: It did feel all a bit inconsistent, albeit his linesmen were also not having a blinder, either.
Man of the Match – Victor Adeboyejo.
Has been one of Bolton’s sharpest players in pre-season and however he got his goal, he deserved it. Looks fit and firing.
Moan of the Match – A few final passes went begging, a little drop off towards the last half hour. All fairly standard friendly stuff.
Magic Moment: About 15 minutes into the game, Szabolcs Schön tracked back to make a full-blooded sliding challenge on Tom Sang. How to announce yourself.
