HUNGARY international Szabolcs Schön is completing his medical ahead of a proposed move to Wanderers.

Representatives of the 23-year-old left-sided midfielder have posted clips of the player in England, with sources in Hungary confirming that he has already verbally agreed terms with the club.

Although the fee is as yet unclear, Bolton have beaten off competition from German Bundesliga 2 club Dalmstadt to sign Schön, who has eight caps for his country, competed at the rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament, and also played against England at Wembley in 2021.

Wanderers have scouted the Hungarian league closely this summer, making their move as the midfielder moved into the final year of his contract with Fehérvár. The transfer was delayed, however, as the Hungarian club looked to progress into the third qualifying round of the Conference League.

Schön played 90 minutes on Wednesday night as Fehérvár beat Azerbaijani side Sumqayit 2-1 on aggregate, after which he bid farewell to his teammates and flew to Manchester.

It is not the first time that he has looked to play his football abroad, signing for Dutch giants Ajax as a teenager, and also spending just over a season on the books of MLS club FC Dallas.

He returned to Hungary in 2022 and has played 57 games for Fehérvár, supplying 11 assists and four goals, playing primarily as a left-winger.

Whether Wanderers regard him as a wing-back option, or as someone who can occupy one of the three forward positions remains to be seen, but Ian Evatt’s side are lacking options on the left as they approach the start of the League One season.

Youngster Max Conway has featured regularly over the pre-season campaign, with Jack Iredale shifting across from the centre of defence to play against Stoke City on Tuesday night.

Randell Williams does look like he will return to the training ground ahead of schedule – possibly as early as next week – but he will still take some time to get up to speed, having injured his foot on the eve of the play-off final and missed the last month of training.

Sources close to Schön hope the transfer can be announced on Friday but though the medical could be completed soon, international clearance is likely to take longer. It will then depend on an agreement between the two clubs for the move to be publicised after that point.

Evatt is hopeful he can bring another foreign-based signing in before the close of the transfer window, taking advantage of new rules introduced by the FA which allow clubs in League One to sign two players per season who do not meet the current points requirements of the international visa system.

Scouting databases have been expanded in the last 12 months with special attention paid to leagues in Belgium, Hungary and Poland, with an eye on finding technical talent who can suit Evatt’s preferred style of play and still fall within budget.

Wanderers have already signed four players this summer – Chris Forino, Luke Southwood, Scott Arfield and Klaidi Lolos – but are looking for more this month, including another attacking midfielder. Evatt has also said he has plans for the Premier League loan market but may have to wait until the end of the window for the right players to become available.
