A look at some of the latest news and gossip from around Wanderers division…

Northampton sign Stoke winger

Liam McCarron has joined Northampton from Stoke for an undisclosed fee after impressing while on trial with the Cobblers.

The 23-year-old has put pen to paper over a one-year deal at Sixfields with the option of a further 12 months.

"Liam has done well on trial with us over the last couple of weeks," said manager Jon Brady. "He has been training with us for a while now, so we know he will fit in well with the group and we have been pleased with what we have seen."

Tykes close in on Gent

Barnsley are set to sign Georgie Gent from Blackburn Rovers as Darrell Clarke continues to put his stamp on the squad.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership and is now closing in on a move to Oakwell, according to our sister paper The Lancashire Telegraph.

Barnsley were beaten by Wanderers in the play-off semi-final last term under interim boss Martin Devaney, who took charge after Neill Collins was sacked.

Evans plays down Smith move

Steve Evans says Rotherham have made no approach for Sheffield Wednesday forward Michael Smith this summer.

The 32-year-old had been linked with a move to the New York Stadium and while Evans is an admirer, the boss is happy with his strike options.

“He was brilliant for Rotherham, a handful against my teams when he played against them,” he told Rotherham Advertiser. “But we’ve had the best League One signing of the whole transfer window in Jonson (Clarke-Harris). Would I love Smudge in the squad? Yeah, but we’ve a good balance.”

Blackpool looking at free agent

Neil Critchley says Blackpool will be “patient” with Josh Onomah as they weigh up a move for the midfielder.

Onomah left Preston North End at the end of last season and has featured for the Seasiders in pre-season.

Critchley’s men are aiming to build on last term’s eighth-place finish, missing out on the play-offs on the final day following defeat at Reading.

Crawley land Saints youngster

Southampton midfielder Cameron Bragg has headed to Crawley on a season-long loan as the club prepares for life in League One.

The 19-year-old has made two senior appearances at St Mary’s and will now be hoping to get minutes under his belt at the Broadfield Stadium.

"I had a really good meeting with the manager and it was obvious to me and my family that this was the place I needed to come to, and now I just can’t wait to get started," he told the club site.

Posh talent ready to step up

Chris Conn-Clarke is relishing the step up to the third tier as he prepares for his first campaign at Peterborough.

The 22-year-old was snapped up for an undisclosed fee earlier this summer after impressing at National League side Altrincham.

"I played non-league last year, had a good season but it was a no-brainer to sign for Peterborough,” he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. "Hopefully, this year I can get on the pitch as much as possible and show what I can do at a higher level in League One."
