Bury boss Dave McNabb says some of his side’s play was “a joy to watch” during their emphatic 5-1 win at Padiham.
Bebeto Gomes bagged a brace, with Iyrwah Gooden, Sam Coughlan and Rustam Stepans also getting on the scoresheet as the Shakers secured all three points on the road.
“I thought we were really good,” McNabb told the club channels. “Other than maybe a five-minute spell in the first half, up until probably the 70th or 75th minute I thought we were excellent.
“The way we moved the ball, some of combination play, breaking lines, movement off the ball, it was just a joy to watch at times.
“(We got our) just reward in terms of the goals, they came at important times and there were some excellent goals. We have probably got three or four contenders for Goal of the Month!
“Coming off Saturday, I thought we played really well first half there and then sort of capitulated so it was really disappointing.
“It was not a true sign of the character in the group. We set them a challenge to put it right and learn from mistakes, and we definitely did that.”
Bury made a couple of chances from the opening day draw at Squires Gate, with Bryan Ly missing out after suffering a concussion. Connor Pye also came into the backline as Will Calligan dropping to the bench.
“Obviously, Bryan was enforced,” McNabb explained. “He has been concussed.
“I would like to thank the medical team for care they gave him and the club for all the support in terms of trying to see a neurologist to make sure he is OK, scans are done and he can get back to playing as soon as possible.
“He is out for 12 to 21 days depending on how he performs in tests. We have a big squad and felt it was time for Connor to come in at left-back.
“Will was really good in spells on Saturday, particularly first half, but we just wanted to make that change.”
Attention now turns to Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Congleton Town. McNabb knows it will be a tough test for his squad but insists they will approach the game with belief on the back of their display against Padiham.
“Congleton’s record last season was phenomenal, they won the league and the cup so it is going to be a tough game,” said the manager.
“They have a really close-knit group and strong characters. It will be tough again against a team from the league above.
“We played three teams from higher leagues in pre-season and did quite well so we are looking forward to it. After tonight, we are full of confidence so let’s go and see what happens.”
