AUSTRIAN side LASK Linz have confirmed the signing of Wanderers youngster Wes Frimpong.
The wing-back – brother of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong – had moved up the ranks at Bolton from his early teens, earning a one-year professional contact last summer.
The club offered him an extension to that deal, which would see him continue to progress in their B Team but the teenager turned it down in favour of moving to LASK’s reserve squad, who play in Austria Regional Central League.
Wanderers will receive a training fee which covers the time spent at the academy, equivalent to roughly £12,000 per year.
Frimpong did not make the first team grade during his time with the club but did play briefly in the senior friendlies last season, having activated a clause in his scholarship agreement to get a professional deal.
A statement from LASK read: “A breath of fresh air in the full-back position for our LASK amateurs. Wesley Frimpong, a 19-year-old from Great Britain, is moving to Linz. Frimpong was most recently under contract with third division club Bolton Wanderers.”
Meanwhile, former Wanderers loanee Shola Shoretire is also heading abroad, having agreed to sign for Greek side PAOK.
The 20-year-old contractual situation has been a complicated one at Manchester United, with varying reports claiming he had left Old Trafford, or in negotiation to extend his stay.
Shoretire played 16 times in a loan spell during the 2022/23 season, scoring once, and has been regularly linked with a return to the Toughsheet Stadium.
It is expected that the former England youth international will sign a contract with PAOK next week, and reported that he has turned down domestic interest, alongside that from Saudi Arabia, Spain and MLS to move to Greece.
