Lostock AC members enjoyed a fantastic weekend in Ambleside in the Lakes District, taking part in the Lakeland Trails challenges.

The event sees participants taking part in races including 100k, 55k, 23k and 14k.

Josie Greenhalgh and Greg Kilshaw opted for the epic 55k challenge. The course covers 35 miles and an elevation gain of 5,800 feet, the route starting at Rothay Park with a steep climb into the fells, towards Glenridding and Ullswater. Runners pass Grisedale Tarn and head to Grassmere, they circle Lingmoor Fell, through Elterwater and back towards Ambleside. This challenge is not for the faint-hearted as the tough terrain makes this a demanding course with many competitors failing to compete the challenge.

Greenhalgh had a superb race, finishing in 8hrs 12mins 22secs, securing second in her age category. Kilshaw also had an outstanding run, finishing in 9:12:22.

Seven Lostock AC members completed the 23k race, covering 14.3 miles with an elevation gain of 2,749 feet. This was still a daring course with tough climbs and steep descents, covering part of the 55k course and Lostockers ran together enjoying the views and calmness of the Lakes.

Rachel Hancock and Louise Jeffrey-Read were first to cross the finish line in 3:05:57, followed by Sally McCoy and Heather Soden (3:21:33), Beverly Atherton-McKenna and Janet Rhodes (3:24:14) and Amanda Smith, in 3:41:54.

Rachel Stevens completed the 14k (8.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1,500 feet). Due to the shorter nature of this challenge, it had a faster pace with participants pushing to achieve fast times. Stevens finished in 1:44:51.

The Wilmslow 10k took place last Sunday - a popular race with world-class athletes taking part. They were joined by Lostock AC members Gaz Folukes, who finished in 48:47, and Stephen Davies, completing his first race as a Lostock AC member in 1:11:44.

Jo McManus complete the Blackpool Music 10k on Blackpool Promenade where runners complete two flat circuits along the coastal path.

McManus was the sixth female across the finish line and second in her age category in 48:47.

Mark Checkley took part in the Peak Forrest Fell Race - a 10k race with an elevation gain of 870 feet - and finished in 1:12:25.

The club also held its annual ‘Try a Tri’ event that, as the name suggests, gives members the opportunity to take part in a fun and friendly triathlon.

The event could be completed solo or as a relay team and participants covered a short swim, followed by a 2.2-mile run and a 6.5-mile bike ride.

The first finisher was Evan Burrell, who was a solo participant. He was followed by the first relay team of Josie Greenhalgh and James Jackson and the first lady was Nikki Hammerton. The club would like to thank Clive Worthington for organising and hosting the event.

Parkrun results: Haigh Woodland - Andy Laycock 23:56, Brian Halton 24:54 (second in age category); Pennington Flash - Mark Checkley 30:03.
