Wanderers beat Championship side West Brom 2-1 in a behind closed doors friendly at St George’s Park.

Kyle Dempsey and Aaron Collins were both on target for the Whites, who made a winning start to their pre-season schedule.

The fixture came too soon for Scott Arfield following his move from the MLS, but Klaidi Lolos made his first appearance for the club after joining from Crawley.

George Johnston made his return to the pitch after suffering a serious knee injury 12 months ago.

West Brom took an early lead when Brandon Thomas-Asante slotted home after getting on the end of Darnell Furlong’s low cross.

Thomas-Asante threatened to double his tally but was denied by a smart stop by Nathan Baxter following a lively start from the Baggies.

But Wanderers grew into the game and back on level terms on the stroke of half time when Dempsey received the ball from George Thomason on the edge of the area and produced a ruthless finish.

The Whites continued to create chances after the break and Collins went close on a couple of occasions. New B Team addition Dubem Eze also saw a shot saved by Ted Cann.

Joel Coleman made a couple of smart stops at the other end as West Brom looked to regain the lead.

Sam Inwood cleared Josh Maja's effort off the line and Jayson Molumby was also denied by the woodwork.

Wanderers finished strongly and Collins got the winner with a low drive into the bottom corner two minutes from time.

“It was a really challenging test and game," said Ian Evatt after the final whistle. "Lots of technical detail from them and us playing a slightly different way and shape.

"I thought it was a really good game for so early on in pre-season, it was end-to-end and there was lots of action.

"I think we probably had the better chances. It was obviously great for the players to win, winning is a habit.

"I know it is pre-season and it doesn’t make a great deal of difference, but to start off with a win is important and there is lots to work on and build from.”
