From Falkirk to facing Lionel Messi, here is everything you need to know about Wanderers’ newest recruit Scott Arfield.

Early career

Arfield started out at Falkirk and made more than 100 appearances for the Scottish outfit before heading South of the border to sign for Huddersfield.

The versatile midfielder spent three years with the Terriers. During that time, Wanderers’ sporting director Chris Markham also worked at the club.

Arfield was released in the summer of 2013 and headed to Burnley on a free transfer to play under Sean Dyche.

In his first season at Turf Moor, he helped the Clarets secure promotion to the Premier League after finishing second in the Championship.

Eye for goal

Arfield produced a moment of magic on his top flight debut, beating Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a super strike.

A few months later, he made the headlines again following a superb solo effort against QPR.

Burnley failed to beat the drop but made an immediate return 12 months later, and Arfield went on to play 86 times in the Premier League.

The 35-year-old joined Rangers in the summer of 2018 and was part of the squad that won the Scottish Premiership in 2020/21.

He has also featured in the Champions League, scoring in a 7-1 defeat against Liverpool in October 2022.

International experience

The versatile midfielder has experience on the international stage, having represented Scotland at youth level.

He also qualified to represent Canada through his grandfather, winning his first cap in 2016 and later captaining the side.

Arfield announced his retirement from international football in 2022 after getting two goals and six assists in 19 caps.

Last summer, Arfield headed to the United States to play for Charlotte in the MLS, who are managed by ex-Brentford and Aston Villa boss Dean Smith.

He has come up against the likes of Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba who all play for Inter Miami.

Arfield also got to show off his musical talent during his time in the MLS, playing the guitar and singing for his team-mates.

Shirt tribute

Throughout his career, the veteran has worn the number 37 shirt in tribute to former Falkirk team-mate Craig Gowans, who tragically died in 2005 aged 17.
