WANDERERS have swooped to sign veteran midfielder Scott Arfield, according to reports in the United States.

The 35-year-old former Rangers and Burnley man has left MLS outfit Charlotte to return to the UK, with several sources identifying Bolton as his destination.

Canada international Arfield is well-known to Wanderers’ recruitment chief Chris Markham, who worked with him at Huddersfield Town.

Arfield is believed to have signed a one-year contract with the option of another 12 months, and though the Whites have not yet confirmed the deal, the club was expecting to complete at least one new signing before facing West Brom at St George’s Park on Saturday.

Ian Evatt released his two most experienced players, Cameron Jerome and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, at the end of last season after failing to get promotion to the Championship.

He has also hinted at a more flexible tactical approach this season, which could lend weight to the addition of a player like Arfield, who can play on either wing as well as through the middle of the park.

Arfield was a hugely popular player at Rangers, becoming Steven Gerrard’s first signing in 2018 and helping the club secure the league title reach the Europa League final.

He stayed for six years at Ibrox but left Scotland with his family last year, seemingly to finish off his career in the States.

Arfield has amassed more than 700 appearances across his whole career, 86 of which were in the English Premier League, and has scored 93 times.
