Former Premier League defender Ledley King has named Kevin Davies as the toughest opponent he came up against.

King had to deal with plenty of dangerous forwards during his Tottenham days, making 264 appearances in the top flight and winning 21 England caps on the international stage.

But the 43-year-old always dreaded coming up against Wanderers and, in particular, the battle with Davies.

He told talkSPORT: “In terms of the best as a striker, I’d say Thierry Henry. But when it comes to being tough, when I had battles against someone, it was Kevin Davies at Bolton.

“Bolton were a physical team. Everything was long ball, long throw-ins, you had to fight for everything.

“Kevin Davies was someone who put themselves around. You knew exactly what you were going to get every single game from him, he really tested you.

“That’s someone who I remember throughout my career, every game you played against, you were in for a real physical battle.”

Davies scored 84 goals during a memorable 10-year spell with the Whites and was part of the side that achieved European qualification under Sam Allardyce.

The striker played alongside the likes of Jay Jay Okocha, Nicolas Anelka, Ivan Campo and Fernandio Hierro at Wanderers.

Last summer, Davies said: "Knocking on the door of the Champions League for Bolton, we had some great players. It was a great period for the club and I'm proud to have been part of that.

"We had the flair of the foreign players, a core of the English players and we had a great manager at the helm.

"Some of the stuff that they did, the way they motivated us - they gave us every opportunity that we could succeed and that came from Sam. He was very motivated.”
