GETHIN Jones has been called up by Australia for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh and Palestine.
The Socceroos have already booked their place in the third round after winning their opening four games but will be aiming to maintain a 100 per cent record in the final two group fixtures.
Jones, who has won four caps so far, will join the team in a training camp in Thailand next Thursday (June 6), ahead of their first game at the at Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka.
They then travel back to Western Australia to take on Palestine at HBF Park on Tuesday, June 11, which will be the first time the team has played in Jones’s place of birth, Perth, in eight years.
The Wanderers defender made the decision to switch from Wales – for whom he had played youth and Under-21 games – to the country of his birth when offered the chance to play at the Asian Cup earlier this year.
Wanderers also have Eoin Toal and Dion Charles on international duty next month, taking on Spain in Palma on June 8 and Andorra in Murcia on Tuesday, June 11 as Michael O’Neill’s side look towards the Nations League.
Toal currently has five caps to his name, having made his full debut just last season. Charles has 22 caps and three goals for his country.
Northern Ireland take on Luxembourg at home in their first Nations League game on Wednesday, September 5.
Josh Sheehan is also a part of the Wales squad who face Gibraltar in a friendly in Portugal on Thursday, June 6, as part of the preparations for their own Nations League campaign.
The current Bolton player of the year is then due to travel from the Algarve to Slovakia for another friendly on Sunday, June 9.
There was no place in the squad, however, for striker Aaron Collins, who had pressed a good claim to represent his country, having scored nine times in his 15 games for Wanderers since signing from Bristol Rovers in the January transfer window.
Wales’s first Nations League game is against Turkey on Friday, September 6.
