Oxford boss Des Buckingham is relishing their Wembley clash with Wanderers after overcoming Peterborough in the play-off semi-final.

The U’s ran out 2-1 winners on aggregate after edging the first leg 1-0. Posh went in front on the night at London Road through Josh Knight but Cameron Brannagan hit back from the penalty spot.

Buckingham, who took charge in November following Liam Manning’s move to Bristol City, was proud to lead his hometown club to the final.

“We have played two very tough games against an excellent Peterborough side,” he told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“We knew coming here wasn’t going to be easy. We knew they were going to throw everything at us but we withstood that.

“We know Bolton are another very good side but we will go and enjoy the occasion.

“We will do everything we can to try and put ourselves in a position to come away from Wembley (with the win) and finish the season as well as we can.

“We will enjoy tonight and probably tomorrow as well, and then get ready for what will be a very exciting week for everyone involved.”

The final on Saturday, May 18 is set to be a special occasion, with Wanderers handed an allocation of 36,550 tickets.

Buckingham has no doubt Oxford will bring a strong following and is looking forward to a big atmosphere.

“We will fill Wembley, I have no doubt,” he continued. “We always do. This fan group, I can’t quite describe it.

“In the last two or three months, the togetherness on and off the pitch with the fans has been massive and I think we would have been able to sell a lot more tickets tonight if we had the chance.

“I can’t wait to see the atmosphere they create at Wembley, taking what will probably be 35 to 40 thousand people there.

“We will do our best now to make it a strong finish and really happy ending to the season for everyone.”
