Ex-Premier League referee Chris Foy has given his verdict on Joel Randall’s goal during Wanderers’ 3-3 draw at Peterborough on the final day.
Randall latched onto Ephron Mason-Clark’s pass and kept his cool to lift the ball over Nathan Baxter, getting Posh back on level terms.
After the final whistle, Ian Evatt felt the goal should have been chalked off for an offside against the Peterborough man.
Foy acknowledged that it was an “extremely difficult” call but felt the officials got it right on this occasion.
He told Sky Sports’ Behind the Whistle: "As far as onside decisions go, this is one of the best you will see as Peterborough United's No. 14 races through on goal and scores.
"With the quickly developing phase of play and the action being in and around the halfway line, it can be extremely difficult for the officials to judge tight calls like this.
"Both Peterborough United No. 14 and Bolton Wanderers No. 2 (Gethin Jones) are perfectly in line, on the halfway line. Therefore, Peterborough United No. 14 is onside.
"The assistant referee gets it absolutely spot on and the goal is correctly allowed to stand."
Malik Mothersille also bagged a brace for Darren Ferguson’s side, who thought they had completed an impressive comeback until Cameron Jerome’s equaliser eight minutes from time.
Bolton had initially raced into a 2-0 lead through Kyle Dempsey’s header and Dion Charles’ spot kick after Randell Williams was judged to have been tripped in the box.
The result saw Wanderers secure third spot and set up a rematch against Barnsley in the play-off semi-final.
Meanwhile, Peterborough will face fifth-place Oxford over two legs for the chance to return to Wembley, having won the Bristol Street Motors Trophy final against Wycombe earlier this month.
