Derby’s slip-up at Wycombe in midweek was a boost, but Nat Ogbeta insists the Wanderers squad cannot afford to let what is happening around them be a distraction.
The Whites’ destiny is back in their own hands heading into the final four games, but this afternoon’s clash with Portsmouth will be as tough as they come.
“(Wednesday night) was great for us because it puts things back in our hands, but the messages have been the same for a while,” said Ogbeta. “It is about focusing on us and not allowing what is going on externally to affect what we do.
“Obviously, results are important for where we are in the table but at the same time, all we can do is win games and get points on the board.
“The gaffer wants us to focus on what we can do and now allow what everyone else is doing to distract us.
“We are chasing, we are hungry and want to get automatic promotion. I feel like when you are chasing something, you play with desire.
“Derby are trying to hold onto something so there is maybe more pressure, but we just have to keep believing and pushing toward the aim.
“As a team and collective, I really believe that we can build momentum, finish strongly and get what we are hoping for.”
There is always a debate over whether it is better to have points on board or be chasing at the business end of the campaign, but Ogbeta doesn’t think it makes much difference to how Wanderers are approaching games.
“We just want to win every game, that is what we set out to do,” he added. “Whether you are chasing or not, you still have to do everything to get the result.
“I think the way we play, the style and intensity we play with, is difficult for every team we come up against.
“Teams are always changing formations to try to match us up and that shows what the gaffer is doing and how we have been able to implement that. Whoever we play, the mindset is the same.
“It is always an opportunity to get three points and progress. We don’t want to rest on our laurels or get complacent.”
