Wanderers came out on the right side of their first-ever VAR decision – and Luton boss Rob Edwards reckons they were lucky to do so.
Will Forrester’s challenge on Alfie Doughty in the second half was briefly reviewed by the VAR team in the second half at Kenilworth Road.
The incident came moments after Doughty had also hit the inside of the post, and changed the complexion of the game, according to Edwards.
"The big decision was the one on Alfie. It was a penalty,” he said. "I never moan about decisions going against us but I am not sure what VAR was thinking.
"Andrew Madley should have been told to go to the screen. I think that was a big mistake.
“There was a clash of knees. If contact does not happen, Alfie is round him and cutting into a dangerous position in the box. It was a pen.”
Edwards made four changes to his starting line up but maintained his side was still strong enough to win the game.
A replay means a planned training trip to Dubai has now been delayed, with the Hatters also set to face relegation rivals Burnley on Friday.
“I am disappointed we didn’t manage to get the job done,” he said. “But the reality is we have got to go again. We will concentrate on a different schedule.
"We were going to be off tomorrow (Monday) and have a bit more time to plan for Burnley. I respect the competition hugely, it is a competition I love and I grew up watching. I want us to progress in.
"I respect Bolton and everything Evo is doing. I genuinely felt whatever team I would have picked, is strong and capable of winning the game. I thought I picked a team good enough to win the game.
“We started very well but we then dropped our intensity a bit. We upped it again and we were the dominant team in the second half. We just could not find a way to get the ball over the line.
"Credit to Bolton, they have got a result and so we have to do it again. They has real energy and were able to match it in the first half.
“I thought we had broken it in the second half but we could not find a way to get the ball over the line. But I didn’t want us to go out. I want us to progress.
“We have got to do it in a more difficult a way and it will be a tough game at their place.”
