VAR’s role in the FA Cup has become a major talking point, with many supporters unsure about which ties it will be used for.
The technology was introduced to the historic competition in 2018 but, due to licensing rules, it can only be used at the stadia of the 20 sides currently in the Premier League.
This means that VAR WILL be in use for Wanderers’ third-round tie against Luton at Kenilworth Road this weekend.
Andrew Madley has been named as the referee for the fixture, while Tim Robinson, Michael Oliver and Darren Cann will be operating from Stockley Park.
There are a number of Championship clubs who have recently been in the top flight, and therefore already have the technology implemented, but cannot use it.
Critics argue there is an “imbalance” across the competition and have called for VAR to be used during every tie or none at all.
In response to those complaints, the FA said last year that the current set-up is due to “the infrastructure, workforce and costs that are required”.
Wanderers reached this stage following an emphatic 5-1 win against Harrogate, with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson scoring a hat trick and Dan Nlundulu bagging a brace. Ian Evatt’s men also overcome non-league Solihull Moors in the opening round.
Luton enter the competition at this stage due to their Premier League status, having won the Championship play-offs last term.
