Jon Dadi Bodvarsson knows exactly what Dion Charles is feeling after his miss against Portsmouth – but is confident that the Northern Irish international will bounce back.
Charles poked wide from close range after Bodvarsson’s initial header was saved by Will Norris in the 2-0 defeat at Fratton Park on Monday night.
The result saw Pompey go six points clear at the top of the League One table, though they have played a game more than the Whites at this stage.
“When you miss a big chance it sits with you, for sure,” Bodvarsson told The Bolton News. “We are human beings and you want to score goals.
“But it is very important to be mentally strong in these situations. It is bound to happen to everyone at some point, I have been there myself where I have missed some sitters.
“You feel really disappointed with yourself for one or two days and then it is all about believing in yourself and knowing that these things happen.
“There is a reason he is top scorer and doing really well. I don’t think it is disturbing him in any way.”
He added: “In the time I have been here, if he has missed a chance he comes back from it straight away. That is a sign of a really good player, it doesn’t affect him.
“He has that fine line between arrogance and confidence, which is a very important thing to have as a striker.”
Bodvarsson, who played the full 90 minutes at Fratton Park, knows the importance of confidence in the modern game.
“As a centre-forward, you need that love and you need confidence,” he explained. “It is the same with other players, I can always relate with goalkeepers. It is a lonely world, you are the hero or the villain in games and that is just how it is.
“But that is what you sign up for and I think you are always ready for it when you have these moments where you miss a chance or give away an easy goal.
“I think the best players, they don’t let it affect them too much because their overall game and consistency is there.”
The Bolton squad have had a few days to reflect on the defeat but attention now turns to the visit of Bristol Rovers, who currently sit 13th in the table.
Matt Taylor took charge at the Memorial Stadium earlier this month, replacing Joey Barton in the hot seat.
Bodvarsson is keen to start on the front foot against the Gas as Wanderers aim to prove that Portsmouth was simply a bad day at the office.
“I think it is very important to respond from a loss,” said the 31-year-old.
“The best teams don’t lose twice and I think that is a key thing for us, we need to properly respond to that result. Hopefully, we will do that in the next game.”
