A big group from Burnden Road Runners competed at the Preston 10-mile and five-mile road races - and returned good times.

Preston Harriers hosted the penultimate race of the Club Championship where the weather did its best to dampen proceedings.

Drenched Burndeners started to finish the 10 miles in just over an hour, with Jonathan Sangster the first to cross the line in 1hr 1min 42secs. Next up was Lee White, in 1:02:45, and second MV50, and Suleman Badat (1:02:48).

Top three for the ladies were Sarah Watton, in 1:10:22, Gwen Kinloch (1:13:55) in first FV60 and Lyndsay Darbyshire, in 1:16:05 and second FV55.

Vet prizes continued with Andy Dunleavy crowned first MV65 in 1:06:25, Anne Ferguson second FV65 in 1:23:39 and Sue Marland third FV60 in 1:53:32.

On the five-mile, which was one lap of the longer distance, Cheryl Dunleavy was second FV45 in 1:00:35 and Ian Mann finished in 1:02:47.

Five of the club’s superb men’s cross-country team travelled to Skelmersdale to compete in the Sunday League alongside more than 200 runners from different North West running clubs at Beacon Country Park.

A new two-lap course was on offer for those that turned up in what was described as perfect cross-country conditions.

Matt Dewhurst was first home for Burnden with an amazing 19th-place finish. Next home was club captain Paul Duke (84) literally milliseconds ahead of Andy Staveley (85) and Steve Nolan (86).

For the last mile, all three battled it out for positions. Keith Thomas, returning from long injury and taking it easy, was next home (161).

MoRunning is a charity running event in aid of Movember and offers a 5K, 10K, half-marathon and a mini MoRun for kids at 1.5K.

As described by MoRunning, Movember is the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year round. Movember raises funds and awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

All entry fees contribute to the fundraising and this year’s total for Manchester was an incredible £1,343.

Burndener Bernie Higgins ran in the 5K and finished in a respectable 30:09 and took home a medal for his efforts.

With a large proportion of the club members over in Preston, it was just a pair of Burndeners who chose the Last Drop Village 5K race.

Burnden’s representatives were Vicki Hamer, who finished in 28:06, and Philip Glassbrook, who was home in 35:20.

The course, organised by fellow local running club, North Bolton Runners, began at the Last Drop Village Spa and Hotel and was pretty tough with steep inclines and relentless rain.

Meanwhile, Burndeners Ian Pudge and Cheryl Dunleavy both notched up 25 volunteering duties at Bolton Parkrun last week.
