History was made last weekend for Bolton Rugby Union Club as their women’s team had their first ever outing.
The women travelled to Clitheroe and despite the miserable and wet weather, there were happy faces after a tight affair which Clitheroe edged six tries to five
Both teams were made up of players who are new to the game and the aim was to have lots of fun.
There were amazing displays of rugby from both sides - Bolton’s players also running uphill for the majority of the game, which tested their fitness.
The teams admitted the final score was not important; what mattered was that everyone enjoyed themselves, weren’t put off rugby and wanted to play again.
The return fixture is set to take place at Avenue Street in the new year when Clitheroe visit.
Bolton RUFC hope this will be just the start for the women’s section and anyone interested in joining or finding out more can email Adele at womensrugby@boltonrugby.co.uk.
Training is every Monday at 7pm and over winter months the venue alternates between Bolton Rugby Club and Sharples School artificial pitch. Players can just turn up on the night.
It was a landmark weekend for the club as the Buccaneers mixed ability team also played their second competitive game on Saturday against visitors Bradford Bumbles.
Bradford stepped in last minute to get a fixture on the board.
The Buccaneers won the game 47-22, but again the score did not matter in a game which was played with great spirit and camaraderie from both teams.
Try scorers were Karl Jacques, Eddy Cooke, Wayne Sharples, Daniel John and Kieran Broxton.
Some of the Buccaneers boys had travelled over from Leeds and Derby to run out for their team.
Anyone interested in joining the Buccaneers or who know someone who is interested, training is every two weeks on Saturday mornings at 10.30am.
The club welcomes all abilities and again players can just turn up.
Alternatively, for more information, get in touch with Mark Brocklehurst via email mixedability@boltonrugby.co.uk.
The next training session is this Saturday at 10.30am.
