FIXTURES across League One should be postponed during an international break, says Bolton boss Ian Evatt.

For the previous two months Wanderers have had a free weekend thanks to call-ups for the likes of Eoin Toal, Dion Charles, Josh Sheehan and Zac Ashworth.

EFL rules state that either club can call to postpone a game if they have three or more players called up, including those at Under-21 level. And in the previous two international breaks, just six fixtures survived.

Evatt maintains that the current approach leaves an awkward skew to the league table, with his side likely to be two or even three games behind other clubs at the top of the table after November’s break.

He said: “I think we need to do something better. For me, I don’t like ‘some’ fixtures taking place, I don’t think that is right.

“We need to cancel all the games when the majority are being called off for internationals and then use the spare Tuesdays through the season. Or use space at the end of the season?

“There has to be a better way that what we are doing at the moment because even 11 games in, October, and they are already two games ahead of us. I don’t think that is necessarily the right thing.”

Wanderers have two games in hand on Stevenage, who currently sit fifth, and could move into third spot if they beat Northampton and results go their way this afternoon.

He said: “We want to be higher in the table but when you have got games in hand it can give a false perception. The team, in general, is doing pretty well but I think we will do better.

“Having everybody back will provide us with a good platform to attack this next block of six games and get us as many wins as we can.”

Meanwhile, Evatt says the club is closer to finding a replacement for Sam Hird in his backroom after he left his role as first team coach to link up with the PFA last week.

“We have had some progress and narrowed down the applicants,” he said. “We have had a look at all of them and tried to form a bit of a shortlist.

“It will take time, and it is a process, but we are very happy with what Matt Craddock has done so far, he has really stepped up really well.”
