Dion Charles played 21 minutes as Northern Ireland suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Denmark in Copenhagen.
Jonas Wind opened the scoring early in the second half, firing home from an angle after the visitors had failed to deal with Andreas Christensen’s cross.
18-year-old Callum Marshall thought he had scored a late equaliser on his senior debut, but the goal was chalked off for an offside in the build-up following a VAR review.
Charles has now won 16 caps for his country, having scored a brace against San Marino at the previous international break.
The 27-year-old had a fine season for the Whites, finding the net 21 times in all competitions as Ian Evatt’s men finished fifth in League One before coming up just short against Barnsley in the play-offs.
Conor Bradley played 77 minutes before being replaced by Conor McMenamin as the Liverpool youngster looks to build on his impressive loan at Wanderers.
The result leaves Michael O’Neill’s side fifth in Group H, having picked up three points from as many games, as they aim to push for qualification to the European Championships next summer.
Northern Ireland are back in action on Monday night when they welcome Kazakhstan to Windsor Park.
Meanwhile, Conor Carty made his debut for Republic of Ireland Under-21s as they drew 2-2 against Ukraine.
The youngster is currently out on loan at League of Ireland side St Patrick’s Athletic, where he is playing alongside Bolton duo Eoin Doyle and Harry Brockbank.
He has scored three times in his last eight appearances at club level and his form was rewarded with a first call-up.
Andrew Morgan and Bosun Lawal were both on target for Ireland either side of half time, with Ukraine scoring twice from the penalty spot.
