Former Wanderers wideman Xavier Amaechi has completed a move to Bundesliga 2 side FC Magdeburg.
Amaechi spent time on loan at Bolton from Hamburg during the 2021/22 season, making 12 appearances in total. His only goal came in a 2-2 draw against Cheltenham at the UniBol.
There was plenty of excitement surrounding the signing, but the ex-Arsenal youngster struggled to build momentum in League One due to a run of bad injury luck. He was already playing catch-up on the rest of the squad after fracturing his metatarsal during a pre-season friendly against Preston North End.
The 22-year-old, who previously represented England at Under-20 level, made eight appearances for Hamburg this season before suffering a torn ankle ligament.
His deal expires this summer and the club have now confirmed that he will join second tier side Magdeburg on a free transfer.
Head coach Christian Titz hopes Amaechi’s arrival can help them build on their 11th-place finish in Bundesliga 2.
He told the club website: "With Xavier we're getting a fast, dribbling player who can play several positions in attack."
Sporting director Otmar Schork believes Magdeburg is a good fit for Amaechi and hopes he can move past his struggles with injury.
“Xavier is a young and developing player who has a lot of potential,” he added.
“Due to injuries, his path has not been that smooth so far. We are convinced that he fits our game philosophy and will liven up our attack.”
He could now come up against former Bolton team-mate Dapo Afolayan, who made the move to St Pauli in the January transfer window.
Afolayan had a promising start to life in Germany, scoring three times in 16 matches as Fabian Hurzeler’s side missed out on a play-off spot. They sat just above the relegation zone when the wideman arrived at the Millerntor-Stadion.
