Wanderers had a strong finish to the regular League One season and are in a good place heading into the play-offs.
Ian Evatt’s men face Barnsley over two legs after securing a top six spot, with the first leg taking place at the UniBol this weekend.
Sheffield Wednesday take on Peterborough in the other semi-final, and the stakes don’t get much higher as clubs battle to join Plymouth and Ipswich in the Championship next season.
The Whites have lost just one of their last 10 matches in all competitions including the memorable 4-0 win against Plymouth in the Papa Johns Trophy final at Wembley.
Despite making eight changes, they ran out 3-2 winners at Bristol Rovers in the final day thanks to goals from Shola Shoretire, Dan Nlundulu and Aaron Morley.
But how does Wanderers’ recent form compare to their play-off rivals?
Barnsley
Saturday’s opponents have the worst record over the last 10 league games out of the play-off sides, having picked up 14 points in total.
Michael Duff’s side were beaten 2-0 by Peterborough at Oakwell on the final day and are without a win in their last three matches.
The Yorkshire club’s last win came against Oxford on April 22, with Slobodan Tadic bagging a brace against the U’s.
Despite their recent slump, Duff insists his side have not lost momentum as they aim to secure an immediate return to the Championship.
Peterborough
Posh are the most ‘in-form’ play-off team over the past 10 matches, picking up 20 points
Darren Ferguson’s men secured a top six spot in dramatic fashion following their victory at Barnsley on the final day, with Derby dropping out.
Peterborough have lost just two of their last 10 matches, including victories against Derby, Shrewsbury and Lincoln.
Ferguson, who returned to the hot seat in January, has challenged his side to build on their momentum as they aim to go all the way.
Sheffield Wednesday
The Owls have an almost identical record to Wanderers over the past 10 games as they narrowly missed out on automatic promotion.
Darren Moore’s side won 1-0 against 10-man Derby on the final day to make it four wins on the bounce in the league.
Their last defeat came against Burton on April 15 despite goals from Callum Paterson and Michael Smith either side of half time.
Two of the last three play-off winners in League One finished third, and Moore will be hoping it is a good omen for his side.
Record in last 10 league games
- Peterborough (20pts)
- Wanderers (18pts)
- Sheff Wed (18pts)
- Barnsley (14pts)
